Collection

The private collection illustrated here in seven categories represents almost fifty years of diligent search and acquisition by the seller. The collection is a highly important, significant grouping of antique rugs and other textiles dating from the mid-19th century through the first half of the 20th century. Over five hundred textiles make up the collection.

The collection was assembled from Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, the Caucasus region, Türkiye and Persia. It represents textiles from nomadic groups, tribes, confederations, districts, villages, cities, and famous workshops. Every known historic type and design of Middle Eastern loomed carpet and related textiles is included.

Over the five decades of acquisition, the collector focused the search on exemplary colours and dyes, design, artistic qualities and very good to perfect condition. No expense was spared in choosing only those specimens which fulfilled the collector’s criteria. The collection includes large and small carpets, runners, kilim, sumac, prayer carpets, yastik, saddlebags, storage bags, mafrach, hangings, juval, torba, and two magnificent national Turkmen costumes.

The collection is now, for the first time, available for purchase as one entire unit. The seller prefers to transfer ownership to one buyer only, without exception. The buyer may be a private individual, investment group, museum, or governmental entity. What the buyer chooses to do with the collection after purchase is entirely up to the buyer.
